Routine vaccination and deworming is a vital part of your horse’s day-to-day health.
Annual coggins testing is also performed. Dental procedures including semi-annual to annual floating
are also recommended and performed by the veterinarians at RREH.
We provide 24 hour a day primary emergency medical care, 7 days a week, including all major holidays.
This includes (but is not limited to) non-surgical colics, lacerations, fracture repair,
and ocular emergencies.
We refer surgical colics to the large regional referral hospitals such as Texas A&M, LSU, and Lone Star Equine Hospital.

Red River Equine Hospital has in house complete blood count, fibrinogen, serum chemistry, electrolyte, and blood gas
analyzers, all which are available 24 hours a day for critical care monitoring and routine bloodwork.
This equipment not only allows us to assess the patient’s blood, but it can also assess joint, abdominal,
and thoracic fluid samples within a short period of time. All other laboratory diagnostic services
can be sent out with most results given within 24-48 hours.
Lameness examinations are routinely performed at Red River Equine Hospital in a wide variety of horses and
disciplines, including Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race horses, barrel racing, roping, cutting, reining,
dressage, and event horses. This includes a baseline examination at the walk and trot, lunging/jogging in
circles, flexion tests, and diagnostic nerve and joint anesthesia. Therapeutic modatilies offered for
various types of lameness include:
- Intra-articular Medications
- Corticosteroids
- Hyaluronic Acid
- Polyglycan
- Adequan
- Stem Cell Therapy
- Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
- Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein (IRAP)
- Surgery (if needed)
 
Radiography – Equipped with IDEXX digital radiography which can be used for routine x-rays to aid in diagnosis
of lameness, various internal diseases such as pneumonia, pre-purchase examinations, as well as intra-operative x-rays.
Follow-up x-rays can be taken and allows for immediate comparison of previous x-rays taken.
Aside from routine survey radiography, we also have the capabilities of performin contrast radiographic examinations which are sometimes necessary for an accurate diagnosis.
Examples include fistulography (chronic draining wounds), arthrography (joint studies), myelography (spinal cord evaluation), upper and lower GI studies.
Ultrasonography – Equipped with two ultrasound machines (one digital machine) which aid in the diagnosis of
musculoskeletal abnormalities, such as tendon, ligament, and joint injury, abdominal disease (various types of
colic, cancer, liver disease, umbilical infection), thoracic disease (pulmonary abcesses, pneumonia), and
reproductive issues (breeding management, pregnancy diagnosis and monitoring)
Endoscopy - Equipped with a Storz video endoscopy unit, including both 1 meter and 3 meter flexible endoscopes, we are able to perform complete
upper respiratory tract (nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, guttural pouches, trachea, and mainstem bronchi) and gastrointestinal (GI) (esophagus, stomach, duodenum, rectum,
and small colon) endoscopic examinations.
Common conditions of the upper respiratory tract that can be diagnosed with flexible endoscopy include: progressive ethmoid hematoma, guttural pouch empyema, guttural pouch tympany,
guttural pouch mycosis, dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP), epiglottic entrapment, subepiglottic cysts, axial deviation of the aryepiglottic folds (ADAF),
laryngeal hemiplegia (RLN), arytenoid chondritis, pharyngeal cicatrix, tracheal stenosis.
Conditions of the gastrointestinal tract that can be diagnosed with flexible endoscopy include: esophageal stricture, esophageal diverticulum, esophageal ulceration,
gastric ulcer disease, neonatal gastroduodenal disease, pyloric outflow obstruction, carcinoma of the stomach, gastrointestinal lymphoma.
In order for a complete examintion, we recommend that horses undergoing a complete gastrointestinal endocopic exam be fasted (withheld hay, grass, and feed) for 24 hours prior to the exam.
At Red River, we routinely work up internal medicine cases, such as pleuropneumonia, RAO (“Heaves”),
colitis (diarrhea), neurologic disease, neonatal sepsis, non-surgical colic, among others. Having the diagnostic
imaging and laboratory modalities at our fingertips allows us to diagnose and definitively treat many diseases.
Consultation with various specialists can be performed as well.
Red River provides various reproductive services including, mare reproductive management including reproductive
ultrasound, uterine culture and biopsy, uterine infusion/lavage, reproductive surgeries (see above).
Artificial insemination with shipped fresh cooled and frozen semen is also available.
Red River Equine Hospital also is available for farm calls for the Ark-La-Tex.
We have two ambulatory vehicles currently and can perform any routine work you may need,
including (but not limited to) vaccinations, deworming, pulling blood for Coggins testing, dental floating, lameness, etc.
Our veterinarians are licensed in Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas, so farm calls to these areas are no problem.
